A delicious Gut Shot recipe, packed with vitamins, nutrients and fiber to support the growth of good bacteria in your small intestine and colon.

Not all bacteria are bad bacteria. In our body, we have about 300 to 500 different strains of good bacteria that reside in our small intestine and colon. These little organisms keep the bad bacteria growth in check, they help to enhance our immune system, help with breaking down toxins and promoting regular bowel movements. A healthy gut microbiome also improves our mood and sleep by producing serotonin and is responsible for brain and heart health. The duties of our gut microbiota are vast. But what exactly can we do to support this symbiosis?

The microbiomes in our gut are in a constant fight for survival, for nutritious food, and for a place to reside especially if bad bacteria try to overpopulate our intestine. The best way to support a healthy and thriving microbiome is to avoid processed foods and refined sugars, which can promote Candidiasis (aka bad bacteria growth). We recommend you eat diverse and colourful whole foods to support different strains of bacteria. Add fermented foods into your diet as they provide good strains of probiotics, such as lactobacilli.

Eating fermented foods not only enhances your good bacteria but also reduces inflammatory bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae. Try including an extra serving of fibrous vegetables and fruits with your meals. Fibre can’t be digested in our body, but it can help the growth of our good bacteria. Inulin, for example, is a type of dietary fibre called oligosaccharide or Fructan. Inulin is considered a prebiotic as it feeds the good bacteria in our gut. In fact, most probiotic supplements are recommended to be taken with a prebiotic to ensure their successful colonization in our intestine. Hence, our recommendation to take Markofruct. Pascoe's prebiotic powder provides a serving of inulin, sourced from chicory root, and chamomile. Markofruct helps to promote a healthy intestinal flora and to ensure overall good health.
