At Pascoe Canada, we take mental health very seriously. As February is Psychology month in Canada, we want to help spread the word and encourage awareness of mental illness. As more discussions happen and issues are brought to the forefront of conversations, we hope to help end the stigma around it. Pascoe works with Naturopathic Doctors to get to the root cause of mood imbalances and help them to treat their patients.

A physical ailment is easy to see and understand, for example, when someone breaks their leg, it is evident that they are in physical distress and need medical attention. They need to go to a doctor and get sorted. Although not always evident, mental health is just as important as physical health. In fact, many would argue that mental health is paramount.

Mental Illness in Canada

One in five Canadians will experience a mental disorder in a given year, and this will likely come in the form of anxiety and/or depression. There is a stigma associated with mental illness that prevents many people who are suffering to seek help. In fact, two out of three Canadians who suffer from some form of mental health disorder will not seek help due to this stigma. Mental health disorders affect people of all ages and cultures, from all education and income levels. Mental health disorders are rampant in Canadian youth. About 10-20% of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder. Approximately 5% of male

youth and 12% of female youth (ages 12-19) have experienced a major depressive episode. The total number of Canadian youth at risk for developing a mental illness is a staggering 3.2 million.

It is estimated that Canada loses approximately 30 billion dollars annually in direct and lost productivity associated with mental health problems. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by next year (2020), depression will be the second leading cause of disability-adjusted life years for men and women of all ages, second to heart disease.
